Rebel Wilson thinks gaining weight helped her career

When Pitch Perfect came out and basically changed our lives with its a capella magic, one character in particular completely stole the show. The self-named Fat Amy, played (of course) by the amazing Rebel Wilson.

She came, she sang, she crushed it.

Now Wilson is opening up a bit more on the subject of her weight. Though she’s never been one to shy away from talking about her size, she had some pretty surprising things to say during a recent interview with The Sunday Telegraph.

Rebel insisted, “I saw my size as being an advantage, whereas so many women see it as a disadvantage.” She said that early on in her career, she was in a comedy and was cast with a girl who was bigger than her. And the other girl was getting more laughs than her for reasons Rebel couldn’t really understand other than, maybe, her size.

She breaks down her simple thought process from that moment of analyzing why this girl may be getting more laughs than her, saying, “I remember distinctly thinking: ‘I think it’s because she’s fatter’. And then, I don’t know if it was mega-conscious, but I thought: ‘How can I get more laughs? Maybe if I was a bit fatter…’And then suddenly I was fatter, and doing comedy.”

Who knows if her logical leap was actually the cause, or Wilson is just so funny she couldn’t help but become a star eventually. It is clear, however, that the world may have a bit of a hangup when it comes to admitting any woman is funny, but this stereotype has been lobbed specifically at more “traditionally” beautiful women as well.

Both comedy and crazy talent come in all shapes and sizes so it’s wonderful to see the beautiful Wilson confidently representing that fact. And we have no doubt that her career will continue to flourish no matter what her size may be.
