Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be hitting theaters on December 20, 2024.

The appearance of Shadow in the third installment of the popular film franchise comes as the character was teased in the sequel as Sonic’s new villain.

Sonic the Hedgehog is an action comedy film based on the video game franchise published by Sega. Jeff Fowler directs the film from a script by Pat Casey and Josh Miller. Ben Schwartz voices the titular character in the film that stars James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Lee Majdoub, Neal McDonough and Jim Carrey as the mad scientist Dr. Robotnik.

The first film, which was released in 2020, was a box office hit bringing in more than $319 million worldwide. A sequel would follow in 2022 that added Idris Elba voicing Knuckles the Echidna and Colleen O’Shaughnessey voicing Miles “Trails” Prower, Sonic’s yellow-orange fox sidekick. The follow-up movie would bring in $405 million at the worldwide box office.

Before the sequel had officially been released, a third movie had already been greenlit. Paramount Pictures and Sega also announced the development of a spinoff film revolving around Knuckles with Elba confirmed to reprise his role.
