Nick Jonas Says He and Priyanka Chopra Aren't in a Rush to Have Kids: 'We're Taking Our Time'

Wedding bells rang for Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra in December after six months of dating, but that doesn’t mean they’re in a rush to add any little ones to their household.

In a chat with Extra about the upcoming release of UglyDolls, in which he voices the character Lou, the actor and Jonas Brothers musician said he’s not in competition with brother Joe Jonas and fiancée Sophie Turner over who has the better wedding — or who has children first.

“We’re taking our time,” Jonas, 26, said of starting a family with his wife.

The “Cool” singer also opened up to E! News at a junket for the animated film, not addressing the couple’s parenting plans directly but saying they “think about the future” when it comes to their career choices.

“And building something that becomes a part of a legacy in some way, and a story we can share with our kids in the future,” Jonas added of their goals. “That’s everything from the music to projects that we align ourselves with and, maybe some of the projects that are more adult-themed we’ll hold those back ’til they get older obviously. But with something like [UglyDolls], it’s just a joy to be able to do this for the kids in general.”

Jonas and Chopra, 36, tied the knot on Dec. 1 at the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, India, in a lavish, multi-day ceremony followed by a second reception two weeks later in Mumbai.

In June, not long after she and her now-husband were first linked romantically, Chopra told PEOPLE, “[in] 10 years, I definitely want to have kids.”

“That is, it’s going to happen in the next 10 years. Well, hopefully earlier than that. I’m very fond of children and I want to be able to do that,” added the actress and former Miss World.

For a PEOPLE cover story ahead of the spouses’ romantic honeymoon in the Caribbean, Chopra divulged of starting a family, “I always say, ‘Man proposes, God disposes.’ So I’m not taking any chances. We definitely want kids, and when the time is right, it will happen.”

Added Jonas to PEOPLE, “Let us be married first for a while before we have to make all these big decisions. We’re in our honeymoon period right now and we will be for a very long time.”

The former Quantico actress told reporters in February at the premiere of her film Isn’t It Romantic that while she and her husband are in no hurry to start a family, she’ll be ready for diaper duty when it comes.

“We both know that that’s something that needs to happen, but it’s not something I think about very much,” Chopra revealed. “We’re both very driven, we love our work, we’re married to our work and we’re both very supportive of each other’s work. So I’m sure it will happen in an organic way.”

UglyDolls hits theaters on May 3.
