With an acting career spanning over four decades, Nicole Kidman has gone through many a beauty transformation. She's switched up her signature copper hair for blonde, experimented with bows and romantic updos, and most recently, she's channelling her inner mermaid with Bohemian waves.

At the premiere of the animated musical Spellbound in New York, Kidman complements her white Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda number (styled by Jason Bolden) with textured, voluminous mermaid-style waves created by revered hairstylist Serge Normant.

It's a departure from Kidman's previous looks, which often veer towards the sleeker end of the spectrum with either straight lengths or gentle bends with plenty of movement. Despite the change, it's a style that still stays true to Kidman's nonchalantly polished beauty aesthetic. Rarely one to sport a prim, severe style, Normant gave Kidman's mermaid waves plenty of airy texture with an ethereal effect instead of an overdone, overly-glossy finish.

This transformation is a lesson in how to switch-up your hair without compromising your personal style. It's also a subtle nod to her hair back in the Nineties, which had plenty of voluminous curls and a carefree vibe.

The popularity of mermaid waves have led to an influx of hair tools designed to achieve this exact look. While Normant might have spent time painstakingly crafting each curl, you can fast-track your way using a three-barrelled curling tong.

A modern day take on a hair crimper, these tongs essentially clamp your hair down to create undulated dents in your hair, resulting in that S-wave, mermaid effect. Prep your hair with a heat protector and mousse for volume, and finish with a texturising mist.

For a heatless technique, apply some mousse into your locks, and put your hair into three-strand braids (do two or three for wavier results). Leave overnight and undo them in the morning.

Stealing red carpet-ready hair have never been easier.
