Nigerian TikTok creator responds to viral video and shows what’s appropriate to wear at a wedding
Oghosa Ovienrioba (@sincerelyoghosa), a Nigerian-British TikTok creator, is pushing back on the idea that you can outshine the bride at American weddings.
The TikToker stitched a video posted by Juliet (@_happy_dagger_), who explained how she will go to extreme lengths to make sure she isn’t outdone at her wedding.
“When I get married, I’m arming my cousin Grace with a super soaker full of red wine because my FYP is filled with delusional women who think it’s appropriate to wear s*** like this to a wedding,” Juliet said in her post.
Ovienrioba, however, begged to differ.
“You can never outshine a Nigerian bride,” Oghosa wrote in her video. “Nigerian weddings are like a mini met gala and we actually take it as an insult if you DONT overdress.”
She then explained how Nigerian brides will give their guests material called Aso Ebi and then let them design their dress how they see fit. Within Nigeria, there are also the Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa subcultures. Each one has different traditions when it comes to weddings.
In Hausa and Igbo weddings, according to The Knot, it’s customary for the grooms to wear traditional hats made from Isiagu fabric that can be red, white, black or blue. For Yoruba weddings, much of the groom’s attire is constructed from the asa-oke fabric, which will match the bride’s dress color. It’s typical for the women to go through multiple outfit changes over the course of the event.
“Nigerians never disappointed when it comes to their weddings,” wrote @nyasha__n in the caption.
People in the comments agreed with Ovienrioba and shared how other cultures also require their guests to go all out with their attire.
“In Morocco the bride wears 7 different dresses with matching jewelry and she’s carried in on a palanquin, good look outshing her,” commented @lna.dsm.
“Finally I’ve met my people,” replied @honeyicedtaiy.”I’m Jamaican and I feel the same way. Y’all are representing me, y’all better show up and show out.”
Although several people under @_happy_dagger_’s post agreed with her, Ovienrioba was able to show that for many weddings around the world, outdoing the bride is a hard thing to do — no matter what color they wear
