An Oklahoma Skyscraper Could Become the Tallest Tower in the Country
Move over, One World Trade Center.
In a few years, if all goes as planned, the tallest skyscraper in the U.S. won’t be in New York City. It’ll be in Oklahoma. That’s right, Oklahoma. When completed, the planned Legends Tower in downtown Oklahoma City will stand as the highest tower in the country.

Real estate developer Matteson Capital and architecture firm AO have unveiled their ambitious proposal to increase the height of a building that’s already being constructed as part of The Boardwalk at Bricktown in OKC. The two companies requested a variance from the city’s zoning board to expand the structure, and if approved, the behemoth would rise a stratospheric 1,907 feet in the sky, making it the tallest tower in the nation and the sixth highest in the world.
“Oklahoma City is experiencing a significant period of growth and transformation, making it well-positioned to support large-scale projects like the one envisioned for Bricktown,” Scot Matteson, CEO of Matteson Capital, said in a press statement. The supertall is one of four total towers that will be erected at the five million-square-foot mixed-use development. Among the three additional 345-foot buildings will be two Hyatt hotels, 1,776 residential units, including luxury condos, and 110,000 square feet of commercial space, which will offer numerous bars, restaurants, and retail shops. The top floors of the Legends Tower will feature a public observatory and an eatery.
Elsewhere, the sprawling complex will include community areas, including a 17,000-square-foot lagoon surrounding the boardwalk. There will also be multiple public roof decks, so residents and visitors can take in the skyline. “We believe that this development will be an iconic destination for the city, further driving the expansion and diversification of the growing economy, drawing in investment, new businesses, and jobs,” Matteson added in the release. “It’s a dynamic environment, and we hope to see The Boardwalk at Bricktown stand as the pride of Oklahoma City.”
Currently, the tallest building in the U.S., New York City’s 94-story One World Trade Center, soars to a whopping 1,776 feet above Manhattan. At the same time, Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which opened in 2010, holds the title of the highest skyscraper in the world at 2,717 feet. However, the UAE’s forthcoming property by Binghatti and Jacob & Co. is hoping to set a new record for the tallest residential tower on the planet when it’s finished.
