Old SLO BBQ takes over Pismo Beach seafood restaurant — and combines the two menus

For those that can’t get enough Santa Maria-style barbecue but have a taste for seafood as well, Old SLO BBQ Co. is expanding to a third location, taking over a Pismo Beach restaurant and blending the two menus.

Old SLO BBQ adopted the Cape Cod Eatery and Taphouse at 1127 Shell Beach Road and renamed the restaurant as Old SLO at The Cape.

Matt Pearce, founder of Old SLO BBQ, said he wanted to maintain the nostalgic significance of Cape Cod Eatery and Taphouse, where the historic Motel Cape Cod resided for decades before.

Cape Cod Eatery and Taphouse opened in June 2019. Old SLO BBQ Co. launched in 2010 and has two other San Luis Obispo locations, at 670 Higuera St. and 3870-3 Broad St.

What’s new on the menu?

Pearce described the menu as fresh California food, Santa Maria-style barbecue with red oak grills and local produce, bread and sausage.

Meanwhile, seafood favorites from Cape Cod Eatery and Taphouse — including the lobster roll, fish tacos and clam chowder — will stay on the menu to go along with barbecue options like the tri-tip, pulled pork and spare ribs.

“It’s basically going to be the best of the best of our menu, the things that 80% of the people order when they come to our restaurant, and then also keeping those things that 80% of the people ordered when they went to Cape Cod,” Pearce said.

The restaurant also offers 40 beers and wines and has a large outdoor patio with fire pits, heaters and live music, according to the website.
