Clubhouse at a former Santa Barbara country club is now a home for sale for $10M. See it

In 1909, the Potter Country Club opened as the first country club in Santa Barbara, featuring a nine-hole golf course, horse racing track and polo grounds, according to Sotheby’s International Realty.

Its clubhouse was later transformed into a beautiful 5,025-square-foot, five-bedroom private residence that is for sale for the first time in 47 years. The charm of the home is found in its classic clubhouse framework with an expansive back porch, expansive living spaces and broad steps leading down to a grassy area.

The price tag is $9.9 million.

The home sits on 2.35 acres at the end of a cul-de-sac. From its location atop a knoll, the so-called Potter House overlooks Las Palmas Valley and Laguna Blanca Lake, and offers views of the Santa Ynez Mountain Range. The grounds have a koi pond.

The estate was the first property developed in the Hope Ranch community, a California coastal suburb of Santa Barbara which now comprises more than 700 homes on 1,863 park-like acres with over 20 miles of riding trails, a polo field, tennis courts and access to a private beach, according to Sotheby’s.

The house was originally built as part of the Potter Country Club. The country club was an extension of the Potter Hotel’s amenities.

“This is a rare opportunity to be the next owner of a true legacy property,” the property listing states. “The private setting, majestic views and heartwarming charm are just some of the reasons you’ll fall in love with this storybook estate.”

The clubhouse at 800 Carosam Road cost $10,000 to build, according to a history of Hope Ranch published by Santa Barbara Board of Realtors. The golf course was the “forerunner of the present La Cumbre Golf and Country Club,” according to the account. Before becoming a private residence, the old clubhouse was a place for skeet and trap shooting called the Gun Club.

The estate is listed under ownership of the Ann Holmes Terrell trust, according to public property records.

Linda Borkowski of Sotheby’s International Realty-Montecito Brokerage is the listing agent.

A new owner might want to update the kitchen and bathrooms, but the property is ready to move in now, Borkowski said.
