Find mochi doughnuts and corn dogs at new, already bustling JoCo dessert shop

A line formed outside the bright yellow doors of Mochinut on its opening day Thursday.

Once the shop opened at 10 a.m., employees hurriedly placed pastries in boxes and poured drinks, only for more hungry families to file in.

The shop’s main attraction is its mochi doughnuts, a combination of doughnuts and an Asian rice cake called “mochi.” The airy confections are frosted and topped with cookie crumbles, sprinkles and more.

Mochinut, which has 150 locations in 30 states, just opened its first spot in the Kansas City area.

Mochinut’s first Kansas City area location opened in Overland Park’s Rosanna Square, 7414 W. 119th St.

The shop also offers mini corn dogs and corn dogs coated in hot Cheetos dust. To drink: milk tea with boba, matcha and fruit drinks. At Thursday’s opening, many customers ordered by the dozen, but doughnuts come in boxes of three ($11), six ($19) or 12 ($35).

Flavors include blueberry, cookies and cream, matcha and fruity cereal.

The shop was nearly packed elbow-to-elbow by 11 a.m. A few families sat at tables, pushed against a mural of the Kansas City skyline stretched across one wall and lined with LED lights.

The chain, founded in California in 2018, has more than 150 locations in 30 states. That includes one in Wichita (and another Wichita spot coming soon, its website says).

It’s not the Kansas City area’s only place to grab mochi doughnuts — Oki Mochi in Blue Springs at 1857 Missouri Route 7 and Bobaly Mochi in Independence Center also offer the treat. But Mochinut hopes to open more spots in the metro, Realtor Carson St. Clair for Block & Co. told The Star last August.
