Oscars winner Kieran Culkin reveals baby plans during acceptance speech
Kieran Culkin has revealed plans to grow his family when he announced live on stage at the Oscars that he wanted two more children.
The Succession star was collecting his Academy Award for his role in A Real Pain and reminded his wife, Jazz Charton, about her promise to have another baby, which was allegedly made on the condition that he won an Oscar.
After accepting his best supporting actor role, Culkin recalled the acceptance speech he gave at the Emmys last January, reminding his wife that she had "maybe" agreed to "more" children if he won.
"After the [Emmys], we’re walking through a parking lot, and she goes, ‘Oh, God, I did say that!'” Culkin said in his speech. "'I guess I owe you a third kid.' And I turned to her, and I said, 'Really, I want four.' And she turned to me—I swear to God, this happened there’s just over a year ago—she said, 'I will give you four when you win an Oscar.'"
Culkin went on as the crowd cheered: "I held my hand out, she shook it, and I have not brought it up once until just now! You remember that, honey, you do?" The cameras then cut to Charton who laughed, nodded, and jokingly mimed shooting herself in the head. "Then I just have this to say to you Jazz, love of my life, ye of little faith: no pressure, I love you, I'm really sorry I did this again, and let's get cracking on those kids, what do you say?"
Culkin and Charton married in 2013 and share two children: a daughter, Kinsey Sioux, five, and a son, Wilder Wolf, three, but it seems the actor is keen to add to the family.
The star, who is the brother of Home Alone actor Macauley Culkin, has previously discussed his love of parenthood since welcoming his children and following the wrapping of Succession and A Real Pain filming shared his desire to focus on his family.
"I’m really looking forward to it when I get home because the last couple weeks I haven’t really been much of a parent, which makes me feel like s**t and makes me feel like I’m not me," the actor said about his plans for his time off after the Sundance premiere of A Real Pain. "I’m going to turn the world off for about a week and just be a dad. ‘Did you read the email?’ No, I did not. [I’m doing] nothing at all, except just diapers and bath time and stuff for like a week."
During a conversation with Colman Domingo for Variety’s Actors on Actors conversation, Culkin opened up about being a dad, admitting he "loves" everything about fatherhood apart from one aspect: "Absolutely everything except dinner time. I love everything else. It feels like nothing else matters. I’m a dad now, and my only role in life is that," he responded. "That’s real life. All this is lovely, but I'm just trying to get home."
Culkin previously admitted he has suffered from dad guilt when he works away from home. Recalling the first time he became a dad during an appearance on ITV's Lorraine, the actor confessed that he was riddled with guilt when he left home for work and was finally able to get some sleep.
"When we had a kid the first time, I actually left town to do a talk show and was out of town those first few days and I was getting a lot of sleep, and felt guilty," he told Lorraine Kelly.
Joking he hasn't had much sleep since, Culkin added: "My body clock understands I'm a father now."
The star went on to reveal he actually doesn't mind changing nappies as he uses it as an opportunity to bond with his children.
"I actually love the diaper changing, I feel it's a connected moment," he told the breakfast TV host. "That's when we can teach each other a lot of things. I come up with games, it's a bonding thing."
In a previous interview, the dad-of-two revealed that he has restricted his kids from watching his and his brother Macaulay Culkin's iconic Christmas movie, Home Alone.
"There’s still some scary parts for the 3-year-old, there’s the tarantula [and] there’s the guy at the end who said, 'I’m gonna bite off all your fingers.' That’s scary for a 3-year-old," the actor explained.
