Owner of a KC area radio station is opening a Mexican sports bar in Johnson County

Harley’s Hideaway, Game Changers, Margarita’s and soon — a new Mexican sports bar.

The spot at 12200 Johnson Drive has housed different bars and restaurants for more than 30 years. Now it’s Yvan Duin and his family’s turn.

Duin, who owns the Kansas City area Spanish-language radio station La Mega KC, 100.5 FM (with offices next door at 12202 Johnson Drive), is going into business with his daughter, Dominique Young, who will be their bar’s general manager.

They’re calling the space Dos Tequilas, selling menu items like tacos, flautas, enchiladas and tortas, while also providing ample screens for customers to catch big games.

Young hopes to have the bar open by the beginning of August so they can host Chiefs parties — “We are really, really big Chiefs fans,” she added.

While the menu is still being finalized, Young said it’ll have a good variety of drinks, including wine, beer and classic Mexican cocktails like sangria and palomas.

And, she added, boozy coffee drinks just might make an appearance on the menu.

Dos Tequilas will seat roughly 50 to 70 people. Young said construction has been moving along: They’ve just installed the bar and have brought in all their kitchen equipment.

Young has always loved to cook, but in high school, she decided she wanted to take her skills to the next level. She enrolled in the Shawnee Mission school district’s culinary arts program, Broadmoor Bistro. After graduating, she was hired on to help teach the students and run the restaurant.

Eventually, Young decided she was more interested in the hospitality and management side of the industry. (Fitting for her managerial role with Dos Tequilas.)

“The most I’m excited for is for us to put our name out there for the community and have people come in and put smiles on (their) faces,” she said. “I’m just really excited to get back into the food industry life and do what I do best.”

The building became Margarita’s Mexican Restaurant in 1993. In 2008, that restaurant relocated to 7890 Quivira Road in Lenexa. Today, it has five locations in the metro.

Game Changers sports bar came next, then closed a while later.

Harley’s Hideaway opened in 2020 — named after the owner’s beloved pooch — but it closed last year.

Young’s new bar will be near growing downtown Shawnee, which is home to several new bars.

Last year, Friction Beer Co. and cocktail bar Wild Child both opened along Johnson Drive. Wild Child neighbors James Beard Award nominated bar Drastic Measures.

And soon, a new tapas restaurant called Gilda’s will open next to Drastic at 5815 Nieman Road. Owner Stephanie Cashion told The Star earlier this year it could open this summer. An updated opening date was not available Wednesday afternoon.
