The owners of a popular Raleigh sushi bar have plans for a new downtown ramen shop

A new noodle shop will open this summer in downtown Raleigh, reviving a revolving door restaurant space on a busy block.

The Japanese noodle bar Daijoubu will open at 180 E. Davie Street in Raleigh. Previously the space started as the ramen bar Kaiju, then became the sandwich shop Reuben’s and finally The Darby Bar.

Daijoubu is the latest project from Jin Chang, owner of the popular City Market Sushi in Raleigh. The new restaurant takes its name from a Japanese expression for “It’s alright.”

“It means things are good, they’re okay,” Chang said.

The Daijoubu menu will focus on various Japanese noodles, specifically bowls of porky, tonkotsu style ramen and brothless mazeman ramn. Chang said the menu is still being finalized, but other noodle dishes are in play, plus there will be casual hand rolls of sushi and other small plates.

“Basically we’re going to focus on Japanese noodles,” Chang said. “We love ramen and other noodles; that’s why we’re opening the restaurant.”

Daijoubu is expected to open in late summer, possibly in August, once renovations to the interior and kitchen are complete. The restaurant will start with lunch service but aim to add dinner hours as well.
