In his biggest hint yet that he's set to reunite with his Normal People co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones, Paul Mescal has confirmed that the pair are 'flirting' with the idea of what their next project should be together.

And in a new interview with Variety on Wednesday ahead of the release of Ridley Scott's Gladiator II, Mescal spoke about what the future could hold for the pair.

He said despite his busy upcoming schedule: 'We're basically flirting around the idea of what the next thing should look like.'

In May, the pair apologised for 'leading people on' after cryptically posting they had 'news to share', which lead to fans of theirs surmising that they must be set to announce a second season of Normal People, the hit BBC series that catapulted them to fame.

'We're incredibly sorry if we led people on, it's not a season two announcement,' Mescal confirmed in an Instagram video alongside Edgar-Jones, who played Marianne in the BBC series. The surprise project between the pair was, in fact, a marathon screening of Normal People in June that the actors were involved with.

Fans of the show needn't lose faith just yet though, as Edgar-Jones emphasised in the clip that while they're not announcing a second season yet, there's still a chance for a future series. 'There's still time, keep the faith,' she said.

A second season of the Sally Rooney adaptation has never explicitly been ruled out by its showrunners either. Lenny Abrahamson, one of the series' showrunners, told Deadline's Award Line Magazine in July 2020, 'I have a sneaking thing in the back of my head that if everybody was willing, and if the stars aligned, I’d love to revisit them in five years and find out what happened, where they are. Is somebody a father or a mother? What relationship are they in that then get disrupted by their meeting again?'

Normal People, which was originally published as a novel in 2018, tells the story of school friends Marianne and Connell, played by Mescal, as they navigate the complicated dynamic of their friendship, and the romantic roots that begin to take hold of it.
