Penélope Cruz’s sweeping white Oscars gown uses brooches as buttons
Penélope Cruz looked ravishing in a sweeping white gown at the 97th Academy Awards last night.
The Chanel darling stunned on the red carpet in a halter-neck chiffon dress with a ruched bodice and an airy skirt by the French fashion house. Her gown culminated in a long train, and her bodice was studded with a line of jewelled buttons. On the bodice, yellow-diamond brooch took the spotlight, and she wore sun-shaped diamond earrings to match.
The Spanish actress has had an expansive career in film, and in 2009 she made history when she won an Oscar in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role category for her role in Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
“I grew up in a place called Alcobendas, where this was not a very realistic dream,” she said in her acceptance speech. “And I — always the night of the Academy Awards, I stay up to watch the show. And I always felt that this was, that this ceremony was a moment of unity for the world, because art, in any form, is and has been and will always be our universal language, and we should do everything we can, everything we can to protect its survival.”
The actress returned to the Oscars last night not to compete for an award but to join the star-studded cast of presenters who took the stage to delight us with their presence — and deliver awards to the winners — at the ceremony.
Other presenters included some of last year’s acting category winners: Emma Stone (Poor Things), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers), Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer), and Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer).
Oscar winners and nominees from earlier years, like Cruz, also reemerged as presenters. There was Harrison Ford, Whoopi Goldberg, John Lithgow, Goldie Hawn, Ana de Armas, Scarlett Johansson, Andrew Garfield, Sterling K. Brown, Samuel L. Jackson, Oprah Winfrey, and Halle Berry.
Performers from this year’s nominated films also acted as presenters. These included Selena Gomez (Emilia Pérez), Lily-Rose Depp (Nosferatu), Elle Fanning (A Complete Unknown), Bowen Yang (Wicked), Margaret Qualley (The Substance), Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez), and Joe Alwyn (The Brutalist).
