We thought it would be fun to dig up some of the Star-Telegram’s photos of campus life at UT Arlington from the 1970s.

Here are some of the images we found in the archive, to include everything from a solemn memorial the day after the Kent State massacre to some crazy student contests and campus festivals.

Feb. 10, 1973: Althea Wilcox, 17, a freshman student from Fort Worth, after being named Miss Black UTA (University of Texas at Arlington), an event hosted by Alpha Phi Alpha. She is a medical technology major and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bennie Wilcox.

Feb. 25, 1975: Mary Guerra, a University of Texas at Arlington student, found it difficult to stand still as UTA students Steve Loving, left, and Darrell Herrington, apply paint to her. Several UTA students volunteered as living canvases for the body-painting session with donations made for the privileges of painting going to the Fort Worth Cerebral Palsy Center’s Project Independence.
May 4, 1971: For 10 hours, people set out around on the grass of the University of Texas at Arlington’s football stadium and listened to music groups Lead Stamps, Dog, Israfel, Contraband, Argus, Holden Caulfield, Tidus Oats, Sugar Shack and Sam Bass. More than 1,000 came to enjoy the music and honor the cause, the Amil Frichk Leukemia Fund. Over $2,000 was raised.

Oct. 14, 1975: University of Texas at Arlington architecture professor Anthony Antoniades and his freshmen students made cardboard doubles of themselves to illustrate the space needed in a structure to allow each person a “bubble of comfort.” Such needs must be considered in architecture, Antoniades says.

Feb. 11, 1976: Nancy Taylor, UTA senior interior design student, was assigned to add furniture and accessories to the Discovery ’76 solar energy house at the University of Texas at Arlington. The residence was recently completed as a joint project of the construction research center. The experiment is in using the sun as a principle source of energy for space, heating, air conditioning and hot water.

April 22, 1970: Students at the University of Texas at Arlington are seen carrying an internal combustion engine across campus to be buried in a shallow grave on campus for Earth Day. Alpha Rho Chi, the UTA architecture fraternity, led the “funeral services” and its pledges wore surgical and gas masks as the engine was lowered into its grave and a live oak tree was planted on top.
March 30, 1976: Janet Stalder, 21 of Borger was one of several members of Gamma Sigma Sigma service sorority at the University of Texas at Arlington, taking donations of 51 cents. Co-eds were collecting funds to purchase mice for cancer research, each of which cost 51 cents, during Cancer Week on campus.
