All the Photos From Issa Rae's Private Wedding in the South of France
Since skyrocketing to fame for her sharp, hilarious, and refreshingly honest portrayal of the millennial Black woman's experience on HBO's Insecure, the multi-hyphenate actress, producer, and writer Issa Rae has managed to achieve what few mega-stars have attempted to do: keep her personal life a tightly guarded secret. So protective was she of her longterm relationship with Senegalese banker Louis Diame that even when a diamond engagement ring made its debut on her finger in 2019, Rae refused to comment on the matter.
It wasn't at all surprising, then, that when their wedding did happen, news about it would be relayed strictly on the couple's own terms. On Monday morning, Rae surprised the world (or rather, her 3.2 million Instagram followers) by revealing she had gotten married over the weekend in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, in the south of France. True to form, she captioned the gallery of photos with her signature humor: "A) Impromptu photo shoot in a custom @verawang dress. B) My girls came to help me, but they all coincidentally had on the same dress! They were sooooo embarrassed. C) Then I took a few flicks with Somebody’s Husband."
The bride wore an ivory Vera Wang couture creation made of Chantilly lace and hand-sewn crystals, and later changed into another Vera Wang dress (an A-line gown with a plunging neckline and tulle skirt) for the reception. The groom looked dapper in red velvet Dolce & Gabbana. The location: Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, which was built in the early 20th century for Baroness Béatrice de Rothschild, a member of the powerful banking dynasty, and which features nine gardens, each designed in a different theme (French, Spanish, Japanese, Florentine, Provençal, to name a few). There were electric violinists to serenade guests like Rae's Insecure co-stars Yvonne Orji and Jay Ellis as they mingled around their candlelit tables in the shadow of the mansion's magnificent rose-colored façade, with the sun setting over the glittering Mediterranean just behind them.
