Pinterest Says This Food Trend Will Be Huge in 2024 ... Again
There are lots of delicious mashups ahead.
In addition to being prime cookie-baking, holiday shopping, party-hosting, and bubbly-popping season, it’s also prime time for year-ahead predictions. Countless retailers, marketing companies, and industry experts are releasing their 2024 trend predictions in an attempt to read the tea leaves about what the next trip around the sun might have in store. And that includes Pinterest, which unveiled its 2024 predictions today.
Using search trend data from 482 million users, Sydney Stanback, global trends and insights lead at Pinterest, and a team of insights pros have curated their “Pinterest Predicts 2024” list. This guide showcases what they see spiking in search interest related to music, entertaining, style, home design, wellness, and — our favorite category of all — food and drink.
According to the Pinterest pros, tropical vacation-themed food and beverage will be a biggie for the year to come.
“In 2024, your favorite foods, home decor trends, and fashion finds will get the tropical treatment. Boomers and Gen Z are driving this escapist aesthetic complete with hibiscus prints and tasty mocktails,” Pinterest explained in the report. It added that “Pineapple mocktails” have seen a 70% jump in searches, while “Crushed pineapple upside down cake” has seen a 50% leap. The “Coconut aesthetic” has also seen a 35% rise, as has “Hawaiian sheet pan chicken.”
Additionally, Pinterest deemed “Melty Mashups” a mover and shaker in 2024. The website noted that this refers to any recipe combining two “ooey gooey, treat-yourself favorites” in one tempting dish. Think: Burger quesadillas, carbonara ramen, and cheeseburger tacos.
“We’ve seen a lot of bold takes across a variety of categories such as fashion, home, and especially food,” Stanback said in an exclusive interview with Food & Wine. “We saw a lot of searches on Pinterest for food combinations in very unexpected ways. What also makes this trend stand out is that it’s really grounded in comfort foods across a variety of cuisines.”
It does, however, sound a bit like a resurgence in both fusion and chaos cooking, but we’ll let the next year decide if melty mashups is indeed a standalone food product. As for Stanback’s personal favorite variation on the melty mashup theme, that would be the pizza pot pie. “As a native Chicagoan, I see it as a new take on the traditional deep-dish pizza! It’s the perfect comfort food for those cold Chicago temperatures,” Stanback said.
