After launching an etiquette program for adults at the Plaza Hotel earlier this year, Beaumont Etiquette founder Myka Meier says she received so many requests to offer classes for children that "the idea essentially came from parents themselves."

The new offerings-the Plaza Hotel Children's Etiquette Program and the Plaza Finishing Program-will focus on traditional topics like table manners and how to shake hands properly, but also tackle more modern issues like social media decorum and the niceties of e-mail and phone communications.

The earlier you start teaching manners and etiquette, the more ingrained it becomes in a child's life.

"From how to properly hold silverware and set a formal table to how to introduce yourself to peers and adults, make eye contact, shake hands and hold a conversation, especially with the increasing dependency on electronic devices, it's crucial not to lose these soft social skills," Meier tells T&C exclusively. "The earlier you start teaching manners and etiquette, the more ingrained it becomes in a child's life."

Boys and girls from ages five to 11 are eligible for the Children's Etiquette Program, which will take place in the Plaza's Eloise Tea Room and be limited to 15 students. Its $125 fee includes light refreshments and beverages, and the course is focused on "basic table manners, greeting adults with respect, making friends, and positive body language and eye contact."

It will be offered on Saturday, May 6, 2017, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and again on Wednesday, May 17, 2017, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Children ages 12 to 17 can take part in the Plaza Finishing Program, which will cover a range of basic etiquette including "dining, dressing, deportment, respect, consideration and kindness, and introductions along with social media, e-mail, and phone communications and event-specific etiquette (family parties, weddings, etc)." The class, also $125 per student, will take place in the Todd English Food Hall at the Plaza and be limited to 40 students.

It's available on Saturday, May 6, 2017, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
