Before you fix your morning cereal or strawberry banana smoothie, you may want to scan your fridge. A few days ago, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) upgraded a recall for a popular milk brand to a Class II level. According to the federal agency, this means that using or eating a product in this category could cause temporary or reversible health issues.

The FDA began investigating Horizon Organic Dairy, LLC on December 13, 2024, after concerns that its shelf-stable Horizon Organic Aseptic Plain Whole Milk, sold in a 12-pack of eight-ounce containers, may have spoiled. On January 17, 2025, the federal agency upgraded the situation to a Class II level.

What Horizon Organic Dairy products should you look out for?

For now, the only product impacted by this recall is the shelf-stable Horizon Organic Aseptic Plain Whole Milk. You’ll want to look out for the following labels to stay in the clear:

  • UPC Code: 3663207113 (12-pack); 3663207127 (single unit)

  • Distribution Address: Horizon Organic Dairy, LLC (Horizon) Broomfield, CO 80021

  • Lot Code Expiration: Best Before/By March, 3, 2025, March 4, 2025, March 6, 2025, March 7, 2025; Best By/Before: March, 3, 2025, March 4, 2025, March 6, 2025, March 7, 2025

What are the symptoms of consuming spoiled milk?

According to the Missouri Poison Center, which is a part of America’s Poison Centers, a national organization that helps educate the public about toxin-related health emergencies, if you consume large amounts of spoiled milk, you may experience abdominal cramping, vomiting, and diarrhea. These symptoms typically last 12 to 24 hours, but if they persist longer, it’s a good idea to consult your doctor.

What should you do if you spot this recalled Horizon Organic milk?

If you find that you have some of the recalled milk sitting in your pantry or fridge, please don’t resort to a smell test to check if it’s good to consume — your bowl of Honey Bunches of Oats can wait. Instead, throw it away immediately or return it to the store for a refund. It’s not worth the risk of getting sick.
