Powerful video shows the cruel ways women are labelled

Jordan Hanz is a 24-year-old makeup artist and YouTube vlogger. With a following of more than 56,000 subscribers, she creates videos using her face as a canvas for incredible beauty, fantasy and sci-fi makeup tutorials. But after seeing the outfits worn by Amber Rose and Blac Chyna at the MTV Video Music Awards earlier this summer, something changed.

“I was watching the VMAs, and saw Amber Rose’s statement outfit,” Hanz tells BuzzFeed. “I was instantly inspired by her.”

Hanz decided to create her own video, using stop motion, to show the cruel ways in which society labels women.

The video takes viewers through the various labels imposed on women, touching on body image, menstruation, rape, sexuality and confidence. Each time she describes an action, the accompanying label is drawn on her face and body using colourful makeup.

“These stereotypes have been laid down brick-by-brick like a wall between who we are and what the rest of the world thinks of us,” Hanz says in the video. “Trapped by our gender, alone, we can never break through.”

Once all of the labels have been drawn, the video then takes an interesting turn as Hanz begins smearing each labels, creating a colourful mask.

“We as women must empower each other and build each other up” she says. “These ideals are unattainable and impractical… be who you want to be and be proud of that because we are women.”

Hanz was surprised at how difficult it was to make the video. As a victim of assult, the “asking for it” label was particularly hard. "After I was assaulted, I was made to feel that it was my fault,” Hanz tells BuzzFeed. “Victim-blaming and slut-shaming is something that I want to break down.”

With over 127,000 views and more than 700 comments, I think it’s safe to say she’s made her point.
