Princess Diana's LBD Just Sold For $325,000 at Auction
The final price was triple what experts had estimated.
Another Princess Diana look hit the auction block — and because history likes to repeat itself, the black Catherine Walker dress blew estimates out of the water. Julien's Auctions included Diana's embellished LBD as part of its "Unstoppable: Signature Styles of Iconic Women in Fashion" event, which also included pieces from Elizabeth Taylor, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Princess Grace of Monaco.
Originally, fashion experts had estimated that Diana's dress would nab $100,000 to $200,000, but in the end, it sold for $325,000. The dress in question was a black velvet Catherine Walker creation (she was one of Diana's go-to designers) that featured an off-the-shoulder neckline trimmed with a striped accent. Julien's notes that she wore the dress to a private event and describes the LBD as having a "bodice with boning, and bias-cut ivory satin accents sewn at the neckline, cuffs, and hem."

Julien's was also the auction house that handled another record-breaking dress from the People's Princess. Last year, a dress that Diana wore during a 1985 trip to Florence, Italy, sold for $1.1 million. The ballerina-length Jacques Azagury evening gown blended a purple skirt with an embellished black drop-waist bodice. That mind-blowing price earned Julien's the distinction of selling the most expensive Princess Diana look, ever. It shattered the previous record of $604,800, which was previously held by a violet dress designed by Victor Edelstein.
Diana's LBD sold alongside Carrie Bradshaw's pink tutu, which appeared in the opening credits of Sex and the City. Estimates put the price tag at $8,000, but it ended up selling for $52,000.
