Despite not being a working royal, over the last several years, Princess Eugenie has joined her sister Princess Beatrice in becoming one of the more active public faces of the royal family. But while she is often seen alongside Beatrice and her cousins, Zara Tindall and Prince William, at various royal and royal-adjacent events, Eugenie has nonetheless retrained an air of privacy around her immediate family, including her two young sons, August and Ernest, with husband Jack Brooksbank. Over the weekend, though, she broke slightly with that habit, sharing a rare photo of herself with her boys during her birthday celebrations.

The picture, which she captioned “Birthday besties,” features the princess smiling at the camera as she sits at a child-sized picnic table with her sons. The boys appear to be enjoying snacks and playing with a Lego set.

As with recent photos of Eugenie’s cousin Prince Harry’s children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, shared on social media by Meghan Markle, Eugenie’s sons are seen from the back or in profile in the image. Nonetheless, it marks one of the few occasions where images of the young royals have been shared publicly.

Eugenie wasn’t the only one to offer up some private pics in honor of her big day. Her mother, Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York (often known by the nickname Fergie) also shared a few choice snaps, including one of herself with Beatrice and Eugenie as children, a current image of her and Eugenie together, and a picture of Eugenie’s pink and white striped birthday cake with a frosting placard reading “Happy Birthday Eugie Boogie!”

“Wishing a wonderful birthday to my beloved daughter,” she wrote in the caption. “It has been a joy to watch you grow into such an extraordinary person, full of kindness, wisdom, and strength. Your generosity and warmth brighten the lives of so many, and I am endlessly proud of all that you do. With all my love on your special day.”
