I’m a professional cheese fortune teller, also known as a tyromancer. The practice of tyromancy includes telling fortunes based on the surface of cheese, kind of like reading tea leaves but with delightful hunks of dairy and vegan cheese instead. As you can probably imagine, I have a lot of need for refrigerated space to store my cheeses — and all the other food my husband and I need to eat. That’s why my fridge needs to be organized in a certain way. Here’s how we make it work.

I’m typically a vegetarian and my husband isn’t, so our fridge is divided by our different food items. I take the right side of the fridge and the two drawers at the bottom, and he gets the rest. We share the door, which is filled with condiments, citrus juices, and sauces, and the butter sits in its special compartment at the top.

The top shelf is for taller drink bottles like my almond milk, V8, and juice. We also store alcohols we like refrigerated up there, such as wine. I also store my jams and pickles from small batch producers like Twidley Bits and Dilly Dally Provisions on this shelf.

The middle shelf typically holds leftovers, cartons of eggs, and much of my husband’s food. He also uses the drawer hanging from the shelf for smaller items of his, like hot dogs, pepperoni packs, and anything he buys pretty regularly that needs to be refrigerated.

I stock the bottom shelf first with refrigerated medication I take, then often vegetables or items we’re going to share when we make meals together. This could be anything from tomatoes and onions to refrigerated pasta and dumpling fillings. The bottom two drawers are my domain. On the left, all the food I buy that needs refrigeration, like salads, vegetables, yogurt, and fruit.

Finally, there’s my dedicated cheese drawer on the right. I keep my own cheeses in there, as well as cheese for upcoming readings. I try to maintain storage protocol — so wrapping cheeses mostly in cheese storage paper (I like Formaticum). I put my own cheeses in Ziploc bags if I know I will use them quickly. Typically I have between five and 10 chunks of cheese in the drawer at any time. I also have a stock of small to-go containers in a cabinet above the fridge so I can prepack any cheese for readings the next day.
