Pups were inseparable at the shelter — until one died. Now Thelma needs a loving home

A gentle-hearted dog is in need of a loving — and secure — home after going through some major losses in 2024, a Colorado shelter says.

After losing their home, a pair of tight-knit dogs were taken to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region in Colorado Springs. It appeared that no one was expecting tragedy to happen while the dogs were waiting for a new home.

“Thelma came to us as a bonded pair with her sister, Louise. They were inseparable, doing everything together and sharing an unconditional love for each other. But in November, Louise had a seizure and passed away,” the shelter said in a Dec. 12 Facebook post.

“Thelma didn’t fully understand what happened, and though our vet clinic did everything they could to comfort her, it was clear that her world had changed forever. Our vet staff asked to have their picture taken with Thelma, hoping it would help her find a new home.”

The senior dog did not adjust well after losing her sister, the shelter noted. Fortunately, a few heroes came forward to help ease Thelma’s wounded heart.

“This transition has been incredibly tough on Thelma. She’s faced so much loss this year, both her sister and her home,” the shelter continued. “But through it all, her foster mom, Kristi, has been there by her side, helping her find the strength to move forward. Now, Thelma is ready to find a family that will give her the love and security she so deeply deserves.”

Thelma is a Rottweiler and Mastiff mix and is an outdoor lady, but not when it’s cold, her pet profile says. She gets along with older children and has been around cats without a problem.

“After everything she’s been through this year — losing her sister, her home, and her sense of normalcy — Thelma has shown remarkable strength and resilience,” the shelter said. “She deserves to experience the love and warmth of a family this holiday season.”
