Should I put on sunscreen, then foundation? How to layer sunscreen to get best results

You don’t need to use more than one sunscreen as long as you choose one that is broad-spectrum and the right SPF (at least SPF 15 for daily use, or SPF 30 or higher for outdoor activities).

However, if you are looking for added UV protection, you can apply more than one layer or swap out your regular foundation for a tinted SPF instead. Here are my top tips for layering sunscreen products to maximize your sun protection:

Chemical sunscreens always go first

Chemical sunscreens should always be the first layer, whether tinted or untinted. They work by being absorbed into the skin. Applying a chemical sunscreen first ensures it can penetrate the skin effectively and provide the intended SPF protection. Follow this with a mineral sunscreen if you are looking for extra coverage.

For mineral sunscreens, untinted goes first

If you are layering an untinted and tinted mineral sunscreen to achieve a bronze glow, apply the untinted one first. Mineral sunscreens act by creating a physical barrier on the skin, so the order of application matters. The untinted layer ensures even coverage and protection, while the tinted one adds the desired color without compromising the sunscreen’s effectiveness.

Layering incompatible sunscreens can inactivate SPF

Not all sunscreens are compatible with other sunscreen products. Layering incompatible sunscreens can inactivate the SPF, leaving your skin susceptible to sun damage. Instead, I recommend applying a second layer of the same sunscreen. Studies show that most people do not use enough sunscreen, so doubling up can ensure you are getting the SPF coverage listed on the bottle.

Putting foundation over sunscreen can dilute SPF

Applying foundation over sunscreen can dilute and lower the SPF protection. If you want a sunscreen that goes on in a silky, luxurious manner like a foundation and caters to many skin types, one of my all-time favorites is Rationale Beautiful Skin SPF 30. It is a combination foundation and sunscreen that provides effective UV protection while giving your skin a beautiful finish. You’ll want to wear it even when you don’t expect sun exposure because it’s so flattering!

Bottom line

The order in which you apply different sunscreen products can have a profound impact on the actual UV protection that your skin is getting. Start with chemical sunscreens to ensure proper absorption, then follow with mineral sunscreens, if needed. Remember that some sunscreens do not mix well, so it is best to apply multiple layers of the same product for a boost of UV protection.
