Update: Queen Camilla Will Be Crowned at King Charles’s Coronation

We finally have a date for King Charles’s coronation! May 6, 2023, aka the same day as his grandson Archie’s birthday (awk). But please be advised that Charles won’t be the only one taking center stage this spring. His wife Camilla will also be crowned as Queen Consort, news the royal family confirmed themselves on Twitter.

“The coronation of His Majesty the King will take place on Saturday 6 May 2023 at Westminster Abbey,” the Palace said in a statement. “The ceremony will see His Majesty King Charles III crowned alongside the Queen Consort.”

So, why is Camilla being crowned when Queen Elizabeth’s husband Prince Philip wasn’t? According to the royals’ website, “Unless decided otherwise, a Queen Consort is crowned with the King, in a similar but simpler ceremony. If the new sovereign is a queen, her consort is not crowned or anointed at the coronation ceremony.”

Queen Elizabeth announced her wish for Camilla to be Queen Consort when celebrating her Platinum Jubilee back in February, saying in a statement, “When, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me. And it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service.”

This was definitely a change in plan because when Charles and Camilla married in 2005, they released a statement saying that Camilla planned to “use the title HRH the Princess Consort when the Prince of Wales accedes to the throne.” As recently as March 2020, the couple’s reps told The Times that “the intention is for the duchess to be known as princess consort when the prince accedes to the throne. This was announced at the time of the marriage and there has been absolutely no change at all.”

Hmmmmm!
