Early on in the coronavirus pandemic, the royal family postponed investitures as a safety precaution. This week though, they're making an exception for Captain Tom Moore, a former British Army officer, who raised more than $37 million for UK health workers in the lead up to his 100th birthday.

Queen Elizabeth conferred the honor of knighthood on Moore in a ceremony today at Windsor Castle. His close family accompanied him to the event, which was held outside with social distancing protocols put in place.

It was of critical importance to keep both the Queen and Moore safe during today's investiture, as both of their ages put them at an increased risk should they contract COVID-19.

Watch Captain Tom receive his knighthood in the video shared by royal reporter Chris Ship, here:

"I could never have imagined this would happen to me," Moore wrote on Twitter earlier this week about the news. "It is such a huge honour and I am very much looking forward to meeting Her Majesty The Queen. It is going to be the most special of days for me #FridayWillBeAGoodDay."

Downing Street confirmed the news of Moore's knighthood in early May, with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson calling Moore "a beacon of light through the fog of coronavirus."

"Colonel Tom’s fantastic fundraising broke records, inspired the whole country and provided us all with a beacon of light through the fog of coronavirus," Johnson said in a statement.

"On behalf of everyone who has been moved by his incredible story, I want to say a huge thank you. He's a true national treasure."
