The Queen and Prince Philip will be buried together in Windsor
As plans for the Queen's funeral next week (19 September) are shared, it's emerged that Her Majesty will be reunited with her husband of 73 years, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, and the couple will be buried together in King George VI's Memorial Chapel in Windsor Castle.
This portion of the events in the Queen's memory will happen privately and be attended by a small and intimate few, taking place at 7.30pm in the evening, after Her Majesty's large-scale state funeral in the day. (Which members of the public can line the streets for, or watch the live coverage throughout the day, which is to be a bank holiday).
Currently, Prince Philip's remains are housed in the Royal Vault, but will be moved to the memorial chap to the memorial chapel to join the Queen.
Prince Philip passed away last April at the age of 99 and in her final Christmas address following his passing, the Queen spoke highly and fondly of her 'mischievous' husband.
"His sense of service, intellectual curiosity and capacity to squeeze fun out of any situation – were all irrepressible," Her Majesty shared. "That mischievous, enquiring twinkle was as bright at the end as when I first set eyes on him.
"But life, of course, consists of final partings as well as first meetings – and as much as I and my family miss him, I know he would want us to enjoy Christmas."
Also buried in the King George VI Memorial Chapel are the Queen's late father, King George VI, the late Queen mother, Eizabeth Bowes-Lyon, and Her Majesty's sister, Princess Margaret.
Recently, the husband (Edo Mapelli Mozzi) of one of Philip and Elizabeth's eight grandchildren, Princess Beatrice, shared a poignant tribute to Her Majesty after her passing, along with a previously unseen image of the Queen and the Duke at his and Beatrice's wedding two years ago.
"Incredibly hard to process the last 24 hours," Edo wrote. "What an incredible woman and extraordinary mark she’s left on the entire world. She was the rock on which modern Britain was built."
He added, "Feeling very lucky that our little ones got to spend wonderful time with her this summer. Rest is Peace Your Majesty. We will miss you so much. Brokenhearted 💔".
Since the Queen's passing, her and Philip's eldest son, Charles, has been proclaimed as King Charles III, with the coronation not expected to happen until next year.
