Quinta Brunson Is Effortless In Christian Dior As She Accepts Emmy For Lead Comedy Actress

School is now in session, and by “school,” we mean the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards—where, naturally, star Quinta Brunson is teaching a masterclass. The Abbott Elementary creator, executive producer, co-writer, and star made her appearance on the red carpet in a pink Christian Dior gown, styled with De Beers jewelry.

For this year’s ceremony, Brunson received two nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Comedy Series. During the show’s first season, it won three Emmy awards, and Brunson made history as the first Black woman to receive three nominations in a comedy category. Tonight, she took home the award for Lead Actress in a Comedy, and had the statue handed to her by the one and only Carol Burnett.

When Brunson hosted Saturday Night Live back in April 2023, she described Abbott Elementary as “a network sitcom, like, say, Friends. Except instead of being about a group of friends, it’s about a group of teachers; instead of being in New York, it’s in Philadelphia, and instead of not having Black people, it does.”

Also in her SNL monologue, Brunson said, “Remember how important teachers are, acknowledge the work they do every day, and for the love of god, pay them the money they deserve.”

In an interview with Deadline in May 2023, she shared her story of how she got into TV writing. She explained how as a child, she didn’t know that a career writing for television was even a possibility until her father’s boss mentioned that his daughter, Elisa Zuritsky, was a writer for Sex and the City.

“I was like, ‘Wait, if someone I know can be a TV writer, then maybe I can be a TV writer’ That Nickelodeon magazine [that Zuritsky gifted me] was very important to me because it was the next level. It was beyond just watching TV. That magazine went behind the scenes of these TV shows.”
