Read This Before You Attempt The Kitchen Aid Blizzard Hack
Freezing cold temperatures and blustering wind won’t stop us from enjoying a frozen treat—but having to step outside to get one just might. There’s a reason ice cream sales slump in the winter. Who wants to brave winter weather just to get their hands on a cone?
That’s why we turn to homemade desserts when temperatures drop. Take our cookie butter ice cream and our frozen peppermint pattie pie, for instance. You can still enjoy a cold treat in cold weather, as long as you're shielded from the elements.
A recent TikTok went viral for making a bold claim: you can make a Dairy Queen-style Blizzard from the comfort of your own home. The secret? A stand mixer. Team Delish loves a good copycat recipe. So when we saw this TikTok we knew we had to try it.
The instructions couldn’t be simpler. All you need to do is throw ice cream and your desired mix-ins in the bowl of a stand mixer, then let it churn with the paddle attachment until roughly combined.
Is it easy? Yes. Is there still room for error? If our experiment was any indication, there definitely is. The first few seconds in the stand mixer were promising, but the mix-ins were a little too large for our liking. You'd think that all you need to do is keep mixing, right? Wrong.
We learned that creating a Blizzard at home is not unlike making pancake batter; overmixing can make or break it. The appeal of DQ's version is how thick and decadent it is. But when you let the stand mixer run for too long, the ice cream melts into a texture closer to a milkshake—delicious, but not a Blizzard.
We're definitely going to integrate this Dairy Queen DIY into our sweet treat repertoire, but there are a few precautions we'd recommend. First and foremost: chill your bowl and make sure all of your ingredients are cold. Next, it's worth pre-chopping some of the bulkier mix-ins, like Oreos or peanut butter cups. And lastly, don't go crazy with the churning. The difference between a homemade Blizzard and ice cream soup comes down to just a few seconds.
