Costco Removes Coffee Grinders From Stores Katie Bowlby

For the past 40 years, Costco has been a mecca for groceries, appliances, electronics, furniture, and more. In recent years, however, the beloved members-only warehouse has begun to make some changes. First, shoppers saw the departure of the store’s coveted books section. Now, Costco is kissing its fan-favorite coffee grinders goodbye.

The news has taken Reddit (where it was first reported) and social media by storm.

"Uh oh, I don’t know what happened… but we lost our grinder privileges," Redditor @phteven1989 captioned a photo of a Costco sign that read, "Attention members: Coffee grinders will no longer be provided."

For a long time, Costco has offered its members not only delicious whole beans at an affordable price but the ability to grind them on the spot, too. Due to presumed misuse, that concession has been revoked, at least at some stores. And according to Costco employees, it’s for good reason.

"The grinders were broken at least once a week," Redditor @Storkman1007 commented on the initial post. "Even with signs to not double grind, people would do it all day long and clog the burrs… Also we had paint brushes to wipe the grounds and keep the machines clean and people would drop the brushes and grind them into their coffee. Those grinders cost a few thousand dollars each."

As it currently stands, the coffee grinder issue is operating on a store-by-store basis. Who knows, perhaps the shoppers at your local Costco are responsible adults and the coffee grinders will remain in place. One can hope.
