A new restaurant with Asian flavors is opening in Columbia. Here’s when and where

A restaurant with a host of Asian flavors is coming to one of Columbia’s key commercial districts.

Teriyaki Madness, a growing company with restaurants across the U.S., will open a new spot in Columbia’s Five Points on April 12, according to company officials. The restaurant will be located at 942 Harden St., near The Flying Biscuit brunch spot and an Orange Theory workout studio.

The new restaurant is being opened by franchisees Cory Sanders and LaDon Mathews. It will be the first Teriyaki Madness location in South Carolina.

Sanders said he developed an interest in restaurant franchising in recent years, and began researching Teriyaki Madness, noting that it was expanding quickly.

“I found Teriyaki Madness, and it was a top company that was really rapidly growing,” Sanders said. “You always want to be with a rapidly growing franchise. If they are growing, then obviously people are loving it. If they are not growing, then obviously that’s not a franchise you want to invest with.”

Five Points was the perfect spot to plant the flag for the capital city’s first Teriyaki Madness, Sanders said.

“This brand usually targets downtown cities, especially when it is first being introduced to a market,” Sanders said. “It’s a food for everybody. It’s a food for office workers, it’s a food for doctors and hospitals. ... Five Points is a place where a lot of other neat restaurants have popped up. So, the area is definitely changing into an upscale, downtown vibe.”

Sanders said he expects Teriyaki Madness in Five Points will, naturally, see plenty of foot traffic from college students, with the University of South Carolina just to the east and Benedict College and Allen University just to the north.

Teriyaki Madness was founded in 2003 and has locations nationwide, according to a store locator tool on its website. It has franchise agreements for 150 locations across the U.S.

The restaurant’s menu features a host of bowls, including offerings highlighted by orange chicken, steak teriyaki, chicken teriyaki, salmon teriyaki and more. They also have appetizers including chicken egg rolls, edamame, crab Rangoon and potstickers.

“I really think the taste is addictive,” Sanders said of the food at Teriyaki Madness.

The Columbia Teriyaki Madness will be offering $6 bowl specials on April 12 and 13, Sanders said. The restaurant’s regular hours will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and noon to 8 p.m. on Sundays, the co-owner added. In addition to the restaurant, Teriyaki Madness will also offer catering for special occasions and events.
