If I had synesthesia, London would definitely 'be' blue. And to a certain extent, that's because it makes me feel blue (don't cry for me, I can hack it: I was born and raised in south east). But for the most part its because I – like many other dwellers of the metropolis – see the capital glazed with a corporate-blue tint: Slow Horses and Industry – two on-right-now shows set in the city – perfectly capture my perspective.
So does the latest Seiko Presage Style 60s.
To me, the watch resembles The Financial District, and Canary Wharf, and NEW Old Street; “This looks like the view from The Shard. And The Shard itself!” was my instant verbal reaction upon seeing the 'retro blue' timepiece IRL at a brand showcase a couple of weeks back.
“Well, it is a European exclusive...” remarked the very lovely Seiko PR, Rachel, sitting opposite me, hinting that the Japanese marque she represents likely had our mutual workplace city on the mood board.
What else could Rachel tell me about the ticker? Honestly, not much, because she knew I was already versed in the model's history. (The Presage Style 60s is inspired by Seiko's first chronograph watch, 1964's Crown Chronograph.)
She also appreciated that I was familiar with its inner-workings which, of course, have not changed with the release of this one colourway. (It's powered by an automatic calibre made in-house which has a 40-hour power reserve and a an accuracy of +45 / -35 seconds per day.)
But what she was able to enlighten me about as I sat with the watch in-hand in her office on Great Portland Street, is its limited-edition nature (though, I must admit I presumed it would be tightly rationed when I learned it was a regional exclusives), the special-edition packaging it comes in, and the brown nylon NATO strap that's included at no additional cost (I personally prefer it on the stainless steel bracelet it comes on, not that I feel that I am the target consumer).
I said to Rachel: “The Broadgate Circle business bros are gonna love this one.”
She – a Singaporean relatively new to London but familiar enough with said gilet-clad ilk and their penchant for Thameside blues to catch my drift – concurred.
The 'retro blue' Seiko Presage Style 60s is available to pre-order for £550 on the Seiko webstore starting today.
