This Retro Denim Trend Is About To Be EverywhereStephane Cardinale - Corbis

It might be the obscure looks that often fill social media feeds during fashion month, but it's the humbler, quieter pieces that will actually impact what we wear next season. Take, for instance, the new trend for high-rise, flared jeans that were championed both on and off Chemena Kamali's Chloé catwalk.

It's a move away from the barrel shape or even the skinny jeans renaissance that have both been talking points and must-haves of late. Instead, the style that appeared in Kamali's SS25 collection – and was worn by those attending the show such as Liya Kebede and Malgosia Bela – was a look to the 1970s and the bell-bottom trousers that defined the decade.

While it might have been the 1970s that this style originated in, for most of us it'll be its 2000s renaissance that their return will conjure memories of. And it makes sense that Chloé is the brand to bring them back. During the tenure of Hannah MacGibbon, the wide-leg jean made a handsome return with names such as Kate Moss asserting them as the jean of the moment, worn with sky-high platforms, simple T-shirts and an It bag swinging from the arm. The same styling approach was seen at today's show, though on the catwalk a piece of lace was worn in lieu of a real top. Breezy.

And as if we needed any further proof that Kamali and her fashion pack are asserting this as the denim style set to define next summer, just look to her own finale ensemble. The designer stepped out to take her bow wearing — yep, you guessed it — her very own pair of Chloé high-waisted, flared jeans. Point well delivered.
