Rory, 59, shared a photo to Instagram on Tuesday, March 4 that showed the couple’s 11-year-old daughter Indiana visiting her mother’s grave with a bouquet of daffodils and a watering can.
“It’s been nine years today that Joey’s been gone. Every March at this exact time the daffodils begin blooming here on the farm - just in time for Indiana to pick and bring to her Mama’s cross, as we think of and remember her…,” Rory captioned his post.
Rory and Joey, who performed together as the Grammy-winning country duo Joey+Rory, were married for nearly 14 years before Joey’s death on March 4, 2016.
In 2020, Rory opened up to PEOPLE about life without his musical and life partner, saying that he and Indiana, who was just 2 years old when her mother died, feel Joey’s love “everywhere” on their farm in Tennessee.
The country singer said he and his daughter “walk and spend a lot of time” at the cemetery where Joey is buried.
“Every time we leave, she wants to kiss Mama’s cross, every single time,” he said.
Rory also recalled a poignant moment in which Indiana immediately recognized Joey’s voice singing on the radio.
“Indiana goes, ‘It’s Mama,'” he recalled. “Indiana starts singing the song, and I thought, ‘No.’ I couldn’t really hear it. All of us got really quiet, and it took a lot of work for me to realize that’s Joey. One of our songs was playing on the radio. She’s highly aware of her mama, her mama’s voice, what her mama looks like. She keeps her alive, just like I do.”
In July, Rory remarried, to Indiana’s teacher Rebecca. In a blog post, the star recalled the moment that Rebecca officially got his daughter’s stamp of approval.

And if she marries you, maybe she could be my new mother…,’ ” he wrote. “As I wiped away some tears, I told her I thought that was a wonderful idea.”
Rory recently made headlines after his daughter Hopie, 36, revealed that a DNA test confirmed he is not her biological father (The singer raised Hopie and her sister Heidi, 38, after splitting from his ex-wife Tamara Gilmer).
“I told Hopie that I guess a part of me knew. But more than that. I told her I didn’t care. That this news and this blood test doesn’t change anything for me. ‘I love you as my daughter and I always will,’” Rory wrote in a subsequent blog post.
Hopie — who, along with Heidi, has been at odds with her father in recent months over Indiana’s care — later expressed frustration with her dad’s response, writing in a statement she was “extremely disappoint[ed]” that he’d shared personal details of the family’s history, including those of her mother Gilmer.
“My relationship with my dad is broken. Not because of this new revelation, but because he refuses to go to family therapy,” she later told PEOPLE. “Him taking the two most vulnerable conversations of my life (coming out to him, and telling him we’re not biologically related) and publishing them to the world, is something we need a professional to help us navigate.”
