Rosie Huntington-Whiteley makes her return to the runway after almost a decade away
Couture week can always be relied on to deliver an array of opulent fashion, but this season granted a moment that no doubt had guests double-taking at something other than the gowns.
On Wednesday, it was Rosie Huntington-Whiteley that made an unexpected appearance at the couture shows. While her presence as a front-row spectator is presumed, attendees were likely not expecting to see her walk in Jean Paul Gaultier's couture show, marking her first appearance on the catwalk in almost 10 years.
Though we've come to know Huntington-Whiteley as a multi-hyphenate entrepreneur, with her beauty line Rose Inc and a hugely successful collaboration with minimalist brand Wardrobe.NYC under her belt, it was her modelling career that first launched her into fashion's favour. Since the age of 16, Huntington-Whiteley starred in campaigns, graced magazine covers and walked in shows, before switching her focus towards her business ventures. Though her last runway booking was in 2016, when she walked for Balmain's autumn/winter show, the business mogul has remained a fixture of fashion week, showcasing her elegant and timeless style on the front rows.
But that all changed this week when she made a memorable return for Ludovic de Saint Sernin's debut Jean Paul Gaultier couture show. The collection reimagined a sartorial shipwreck with the sculptural corseting and maritime influences that have become entwined with JPG's legacy. Huntington-Whiteley looked haunting on the runway, adorned in an off-the-shoulder sheer black tulle dress with a braided cage corset and lace hemline that swept behind her as she walked.
The beauty look was masterminded by the hairstylist Guido Palau and the make-up artist Karin Westerlund, who played heavily on the sea-ravaged theme of the collection, with Huntington-Whiteley's long blonde hair secured in a sculptural, wet heap with windswept wisps slicked to her face.
On Instagram, the model shared videos of her homecoming, captioning the post; "Return to the runway for Le Naufrage. Congratulations @ludovicdesaintsernin on a stunning show— an honour to be part of your vision!"
We for one hope that this isn't the last we see of Huntington-Whiteley on the fashion week catwalk.
