How the Royal Family Is Spending the Anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's Death

On September 8, 2022, exactly one year ago today, Buckingham Palace announced that Queen Elizabeth had died peacefully at her beloved summer retreat, Balmoral Castle. Immediately upon her passing, Charles became King.

This year, King Charles will spend the anniversary of his accession and his mother's passing "quietly and privately," according to a royal spokesperson. He will be at Balmoral today, along with Queen Camilla. Just as Queen Elizabeth privately the anniversary of her accession and the death of her father King George VI at Sandringham, so, too, will Charles spend the day out largely of the public eye. He was, however, pictured leaving Crathie Parish Church along with Camilla.

"In marking the first anniversary of Her late Majesty’s death and my Accession, we recall with great affection her long life, devoted service and all she meant to so many of us," Charles said in a tribute to his mother. "I am deeply grateful, too, for the love and support that has been shown to my wife and myself during this year as we do our utmost to be of service to you all."

Prince William and Kate Middleton are not spending the day privately; the Prince and Princess of Wales had a scheduled public appearance, traveling to Wales where they attended a small, private service at St Davids Cathedral to commemorate the life of Queen Elizabeth.

Back in England, Prince Harry was pictured privately paying his respects to his late grandmother at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, where Queen Elizabeth is buried, and the Duchess of Gloucester visited the Ascot Racecourse, where a photography exhibit commemorates Queen Elizabeth's love of horses.

Tributes marking the one year anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's passing have already begun to be shared on social media. The official channels for the royal family posted a new portrait of Queen Elizabeth, taken in 1968, while Prince William and Kate Middleton shared three photos, including one taken by Kate at Balmoral last summer.
