It’s not often that I fall for online ads, since when I shop I generally have a pretty good idea of what I’m already looking for. Occasionally though, one product will be continuously recommended in both ads and through influencers that I finally cave and give in to the hype.
My latest social-media influenced purchase? A washable carpet from Ruggable. With more than 20,000 tagged posts on Instagram alone, it's easy to see that thousands of shoppers have already fallen for the low-maintenance styles.
What is it?
With an innovative two-piece design, the concept behind Ruggable carpets is pretty simple: the brand makes rugs that are easy to clean yet still stylish - perfect for people with pets, kids, or a penchant for spills.
Ruggable Washable Carpets
SHOP IT: Ruggable, from $105 (from $80 USD)
Each rug comes with a non slip rug pad, as well as a lightweight cover that comes in hundreds of different designs to choose from. Like velcro, the two layers stick together and simply need to be peeled apart whenever it’s time for the top layer to be cleaned. Available in both round and rectangular shapes, the rugs can be found in compact door mat sizes all the way up to large 9’ by 12’ carpets.
What initially attracted me to Ruggable was their unique Disney and Star Wars collaborations, which offer surprisingly grown-up takes on two massive fandoms. Though I didn’t actually end up going with either of those styles, I was certainly tempted, especially by the Toile de Jouy-inspired Star Wars design below.
First impressions
I recently moved into a new apartment, and since our old rug just wasn’t cutting it in our new entry way, my partner and I decided to upgrade to one from Ruggable. We figured that the double layered design was a practical choice for a front entrance, especially now that we’re coming up on wet spring weather (and the accompanying soggy footwear). It also comes with a slip-proof underpad, ensuring that it stays in place no matter what.
Ordering our 3' by 5' rug was quick and easy, and despite a warning that it may take up to four weeks for my purchase to ship out, I actually received it in just under two weeks. It came packaged in a convenient cardboard box, and after watching a quick tutorial I had it set up in just a few minutes.
It’s been a couple of weeks since the new rug arrived, and while the Classic Ruggable Pad has done a fantastic job at staying in place without any slipping, I will say that the corners not completely aligning is a bit of an inconvenience. You can clearly see the pad underneath the cover, and since it’s slightly smaller than the top layer there’s really no way to ensure that you end up with a perfect fit.
This seems to be a common issue among shoppers, and it looks like the brand is listening to the feedback with the release of a new and improved pad coming soon.
The verdict
While I haven't yet had a chance to wash my new Ruggable carpet, I'm looking forward to when the time comes as hundreds of positive reviews have shared.
"I love my rug and I can't wait to get more. We use it for under our dining table and have 4 young kids, so it has already gotten a big workout after only a few months. I have washed it twice (once for general wear, and once for more emergency stain - purple paint) and no issues AT ALL," reads one five-star review.
"In the past we have had traditional area rugs that we would either have professionally cleaned or my husband would one day pick them up and take to the dumps because he was tired of the dog smell. We no longer need to worry about this with Ruggable. I just pull it up and throw in our front load washer machine," another reviewer shared. "Since my first Ruggable, I have ordered a 3 x 5 for one of my bathrooms and I am getting ready to purchase another."
I'll definitely be providing an update once I've had a chance to toss it into the wash myself, but so far I've been pretty impressed with my purchase. Though they're not the most affordable rugs around (prices start at $105 CAD), in the long run it will likely save me money from not having to professionally clean or throw away soiled carpets.
