A Runway-Inspired Nail Art Look You Can Actually Do

Backstage at this season's Stella McCartney show, manicurist Madeline Poole painted all the models' nails a sheer nude polish shot through with pink pearl. It was subdued and elegant, but it didn't exactly let Poole's incredible talent for serious nail art shine. So after the show, the Global Color Ambassador for Sally Hansen whipped up a more dramatic nail look directly inspired by a dress in the spring 2017 collection.

Poole said the pattern reminded her of spilled nail polish (and only a nail whiz could turn that into something pretty and not furniture-ruining). So we asked her to give us the exclusive rundown on exactly how to recreate the look; it's a lot easier than you think. Here's the step-by-step.

1. Start by applying two coats of your favorite almost-black or black nail polish (Poole used Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Dark Hue-More). Let it totally dry.

2. Using a striping brush (a very, very skinny detailing brush), draw random splash shapes toward the tip of your nails with an opaque turquoise shade like Water Color from Sally Hansen. Once all your nails are done, give them a minute to dry.

3. Clean your striping brush so you're not mixing any polish colors together. Then repeat the drip shapes a little bit further down your nail, toward your cuticles, with a Barbie pink shade. Again, let them dry (we know you're impatient but this is key).

4. Clean that brush one more time. Dip it in a creamy opaque baby pink nail polish shade and trace it along your cuticles, then drag it up in the same drip shapes. Don't be afraid to layer it over the other drip marks you made to add some depth.

Once again let it dry, layer on your favorite shiny top coat, and you're done. Even if you're only slightly obsessed with nails and nail art, be sure to follow Madeline on Instagram (@MPNails) for more inspiration from on and off the runways.
