The Salehe Bembury x New Balance 530 "Prosperity Be The Prize" Gets Its General Release
If you live in Copenhagen, or happen to spend a lot of time in the Scandi capital, you might already be acquainted with Salehe Bembury’s newest New Balance sneaker.
You see, the NYC-born sneaker designer was in the Danish city for its August ‘24 Fashion Week, and he decided to pop up a pop-up and give out pairs – give out as in for free – of the shoe that myself and my peers are now seriously ready to buy.
Again: Free.
(What hurts the most is that I told a friend – she’d say acquaintance – who was out there at the time to queue up and grab a pair. Her response: “Queue’s too long”. :/)
I digress.
My original point was that the shoe – named “Prosperity Be the Prize”, in true Bembury fashion (the names of his NB brainchildren include “Water be the Guide” and “Peace be the Journey”) – has been about and around in the city for a hot minute whilst sneakerheads elsewhere have been forced to practice patience.
It really is a good'un.
Bembury’s use of a “dusty yellow with green” foundation – bedecked with hits of “electric green”, “leaf green”, “sky blue”, pink and purple, and a fingerprint-inspired adaptation of New Balance's “N” logo – liberates the typically quotidian mesh and nubuck 530.
His inspirations for the “Prosperity” 530?
Here comes the plot twist.
Despite the sneak's exclusivity in Copenhagen this summer, the Yank credits the Arashiyama bamboo forest in Kyoto, Japan as its muse.
That certainly explains the bamboo-adorned shoe box.
And the Panda mascot, in the campaign imagery.
Plus, the video which stars Bembury's fellow United Statesman, Michael Ealy.
Don't get many of those in Denmark (Pandas or Ealys).
The New Balance x Salehe Bembury 530 “Let Prosperity Be the Prize” will be available for £120 on Thursday 7 November on the New Balance webstore and via raffle at End and SNS.
Alternatively, you can cop now for demand price on resale marketplaces such as StockX.
