Why Sarah Ferguson Didn't Go to King Charles III's Coronation
Sarah Ferguson doesn't seem to be too bothered about not being invited to King Charles III's coronation.
During a guest appearance on ITV's Good Morning Britain, Fergie—who divorced from disgraced royal Prince Andrew in 1996, but still currently lives with him—explained why she isn't concerned about the invitation snub.
"It's a state occasion, and being divorced I don't think you can have it both ways," she said. "I am divorced and I'm really loving being divorced to my ex-husband, not from him but to him, it's important to differentiate."
The Duchess of York added that she can still support the king privately.
"That's a lovely feeling to be part of, it really is," she said. "As I said you can't have it both ways. You mustn't sit on the fence. You're either in or out, don't muck around."
Reflecting on the state of the royal family today with its new sovereign, Fergie added, "The great thing about this moment in time is the unity of family, and I think that Charles and Camilla are doing an exceptional job at unifying the family."
The Independent reported in April that the duchess—who shares daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie with Andrew—was not invited to the May 6 event.
Andrew himself stepped down from royal duties in 2019, after an alleged victim of Jeffrey Epstein's sex trafficking ring, Virginia Giuffre, accused the royal of participating in the operation. Though Andrew's coronation attendance has yet to be confirmed, it is likely that he will be present, along with siblings Princess Anne and Prince Edward.
