Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, Paid Homage to Queen Elizabeth On the Anniversary of Her Death
With the first anniversary of the death of Britain's Queen Elizabeth upon us, royals and commonfolk are speaking out to pay tribute to the late, long-reigning queen. Among them is Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, who today shared several posts to social media honoring the memory of her former mother -in-law.
Ferguson, who is the ex-wife of Elizabeth's son Prince Andrew and mother to Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, first shared an Instagram post with a throwback photo of the late queen, writing "You were a wonderful friend, a mentor, a second mother to me and grandmother to my daughters who share so much of your courage and heart. You will always be loved and missed by our family and our nation."
She then shared an image with a quote by Elizabeth: "Whatever life throws at us, our individual responses will be all the stronger for working together and sharing the load." On that post, Ferguson wrote, "I often remember the wise words Her Late Majesty the Queen shared with me and the wider world. At a time of great troubles in the world one year after her passing, today this quote of hers seems more apt than ever."
Finally, she took a moment to update the world on the queen's beloved corgis.
"As we mourn a year on, we also celebrate the wonderful times we shared with Her Late Majesty the Queen," Ferguson captioned a photo of herself with the dogs. "She entrusted me with the care of her corgis Sandy and Muick and I am delighted to say they are thriving."
Though Ferguson and Prince Andrew divorced in 1997, they have continued to live together at Royal Lodge in Windsor, and adopted Elizabeth's beloved dogs after the monarch's death in September 2022. The corgis, named Muick and Sandy, were reportedly a gift from Prince Andrew, and according to Angela Kelly, Queen Elizabeth's dresser and trusted confidant, were a "godsend" and a "constant joy" for the Queen during the pandemic.
"They are national icons, so every time they run chasing a squirrel, I panic," Ferguson told People of the dogs in March 2023. "But they're total joys, and I always think that when they bark at nothing, and there's no squirrels in sight, I believe it's because the Queen is passing by."
