You saw Saturday’s KC Pride Parade, but did you see this parade on the Missouri River?

Saturday was a day for parades in Kansas City.

Hundreds of people, many in outlandish costumes or riding on floats bedecked in rainbow motifs to celebrate LGBTQ communities, marched in the KC Pride Parade Saturday morning. That parade started in Westport, made its way past the Country Club Plaza and ended in Theis Park.

Another not so well known, but nearly as colorful, parade started a few hours later closer to downtown Kansas City.

Starting at Kaw Point Park at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers, dozens of boats put into the water to participate in a parade of art boats during the Kawsmouth River Carnival.

Most of the boats in the event were typical kayaks and canoes that can be seen on the rivers but these came with extra bling. The event organizers of this Mardi Gras-style boat parade, Lucid Illusion Collective in partnership with Healthy Rivers Partnership, encouraged the boaters to decorate their crafts and have some fun as the current carried them to their landing point at Riverfront Park. Many of the boats’ crews floated down the Big Muddy in costumes. Prizes were awarded for the best entries.

A Viking longboat, a lobster-themed boat and a boat with a giant frog floated under the bridges and past the downtown skyline. One of the bigger boats, the Kansas City Lady, served as a stage for the Riverbeat Rascals jazz band as the band performed during its voyage downstream.

Here are photos from the event.
