The magazine aisle is full of them. Headlines promising flat tummies, shrinking thighs and, of course, the secret trick to scoring a bikini body – in three to seven days, no less!

Tired of this, Women’s Health editor-in-chief, Amy Keller Laird, has vowed to put an end to these types of headlines. In a letter to readers she says, “Peace Out, ‘Bikini Body'—We’re Kicking You Off of Our Covers for Good.”

The letter comes in light of a reader survey, which asked readers to provide feedback on the magazine, including words that they liked seeing on covers and the ones they hated most. Favourite words included “toned,” “strong” and “sexy” while “shrink” and “diet” were shunned. There was also a request to remove the phrases, “Bikini Body” and “Drop Two Sizes.”

“Since our goal is always to pump you up, and never to make you feel bad, here’s our pledge: They’re gone. They’ll no longer appear on Women’s Health covers,” Keller Laird pledged.

To cement this, she wrote a “Dear John” letter to each phrase:

While reaction has been small so far – most people are on holidays and have yet to see the news – those who have seen the announcement have reacted positively.
