When was the last time you thought about the condition of your scalp? If you luckily aren't dealing with constantly oily roots or flakes and dandruff, I'm going to assume not very often. But lately, with the flux of new and innovative exfoliating scalp-care products popping up on shelves, it's got me asking: Am I not washing my hair correctly?
Just like skincare, exfoliation is the foundation of a healthy base and the key to healthy hair. Neglecting the health of your scalp and improper or abrasive cleansing can lead to clogged follicles, itchy, flaky skin or an overly-oily scalp which can result in dull, bodiless locks. On the other hand, regularly exfoliating your scalp can significantly benefit your hair growth while regulating its hydration and moisture.
Scalp scrubs and chemical exfoliants, such as serums and masks, are designed to remove scalp buildup, allowing naturals oils to keep the scalp and hair nourished. With proper regulation, it prevents a dry scalp and over-production of sebum, which can lead to dandruff. But if you're dealing with a healthy scalp, exfoliating isn't necessary unless you've had an excessive amount of product in your hair. A good rule of thumb is to exfoliate your scalp at least once every 10 washes.
