Is Scent Astrology The Next Fragrance Frontier?
A strong breeze whips through the air on an unusually cool Santorini evening, causing the panorama overhead to transform from candy pink to burnt orange. The waves begin to lap furiously and raindrops pitter-patter on the terrace, disturbing the peace of an otherwise postcard backdrop of the Greek Island.
As my senses switch on, taking in the new sounds, smells and scenes of the island, I'm feeling unusually calm. I’m sitting in front of the perfumer Veronique Gabai who, in the midst of a three-day retreat, is telling me about the multi-faceted nature of fragrance. More specifically, scent astrology - a new term that denotes using personality traits from your zodiac sign with finding a signature scent.
‘We choose perfume according to a very personal filter, one informed by our emotions, our personal journey and our personality,’ Gabai tells me. ‘Gemini is an air sign, and a mutable one, with a huge capacity for charm.' Iris, musk, leather and vanilla are the notes destined for the ‘dual personality’ of a Gemini like myself. Meanwhile, fire signs like Leos can look to fiery aromatics and amber notes and easygoing Libras are likely to be drawn to lighter, fruitier aromas.

What is scent astrology?
‘Astrology depicts some traits of your personality based on the position of the planets at the time of your birth. We had already worked on scents and personality, understanding what kind of fragrance family would work for you, through an analysis of your sensorial preferences and a correspondence between the senses... It seemed only logical to connect these dots,’ she said of what led her to focus on scent astrology, and more specifically, a new scent astrology retreat in partnership with Nobu Santorini.
It's the reason why I find myself looking out onto the enviable Caldera views: to experience the first scent astrology retreat and tap into the power of scent through a new lens. Enveloped by the salty sea air, a 360-degree view of the Aegean sea and the lingering aromas which have been spritzed to match my Zodiac sign, there is perhaps no more perfect setting.
Gabai continues: 'We did it in a serious fashion with US astrologer Ophira Edut (aka one of two of ELLE's AstroTwins) yet keeping it light and fun as this is just a way to explore who we are, while keeping the freedom to pick and choose what we like.' I might have been skeptical at first, but after minutes in the company of Gabai, I'm sold on the concept. After all, as Gabai tells me: 'If the moon and the sun influence the world we live in, they probably do influence us to some degree too.'
Using raw materials to craft her perfumes also correspond to certain personalities, she explains. 'Citrus notes bring positivity and joy; rose is a scent that immediately brings the feeling of love; woods are warm, mysterious, and yet calming,' she says. 'You can align these notes with the planets and the astrological signs.' It's a new way to experience perfume, and when you consider how emotive scent can be, with the power to evoke memories and tap into our emotions, it makes perfect sense.
What does a scent astrology retreat look like?
This new scent astrology retreat, a partnership between Gabai and Nobu Santorini, aims to challenge the senses in a picture-perfect setting. And it is idyllic: white-washed villages clinging to the cliffside, a tranquil, muted colour palette and unbeatable views of the Aegean sea.
A ‘holistic astrology retreat’ was a first for me, and certainly a treat for the senses. Along with fascinating workshops on scent astrology and star gazing, you can expect a series of Zodiac-inspired activities, from spa treatments to personalised Astro cocktails and dining under the stars with an Omakase dinner.
Though you could easily spend your time flitting between the infinity pool and loungers, the location is the perfect backdrop for hiking.
