There are countless images on my Pinterest boards of women in chic outfits with cardigans slung over their shoulders. I’ve found myself longing for high-quality basics so I, too, can achieve the same laid-back elegance—without shelling out the sum of mortgage payments. After some research, I decided French label Sézane’s Barry Cardigan was the one. Unfortunately, it was out of stock for months. Finally, after lusting over it for months (and seeing every fashion girl on social media spotted in it), it’s finally back in stock online.

So why is this seemingly simple knitwear basic so beloved? First of all, the V-neck cardi can be worn in two ways, offering peak versatility and multiple looks with just one piece. The first is the way you’d expect, with the buttons down the front, but you can also wear it backward, with the v-neck and buttons down the back.

I bought it in red, so it’s the perfect pop of color, but it’s available in several other colorways as well. The site says this sweater runs large, but I’d argue it’s more true to size.

The only con of this cardigan is that it’s a bit itchy. It is wool, after all, and it’s made from a blend of 37 percent super kid mohair, 37 percent baby alpaca, and 26 percent polyamide. This blend may be irritating to someone with sensitive skin, and I prefer to wear a cami or shirt underneath or wear it over my shoulders.

This sweater is hand wash only, which isn’t a deal breaker for me, but the specific care is important to know before purchasing. A sweater like this requires some extra love, but it’s beyond worth it.

All in all, this is a chic and well-made wardrobe staple I’m so glad to have in my closet. I get compliments every time I wear it, which is a sign that this purchase was well worth it. Grab one now before it sells out again.
