After a controversial run on Dancing With the Stars, Sean Spicer was finally sent home on Monday night's show. In an interview with People, the former White House press secretary said he's "relieved in a way" to have been eliminated from the ballroom dancing competition.

The announcement of Spicer joining this season's cast caused blowback amongst both fans and members of the show's cast alike. After taking to the ballroom floor in September, Spicer began receiving low scores from the judges week after week, but was consistently saved from elimination thanks to fans' votes.

The show's audience — and its judges — became increasingly frustrated to see higher-scoring dancers get sent home while Spicer remained in the competition. But on Monday night, Spicer found himself in the bottom two with country singer Lauren Alaina, and the judges chose to send Spicer packing.

Despite saying he had mixed emotions about his dancing journey coming to an end, Spicer said he ultimately feels like he should have been the one to go home.

"The judges made the right decision on a night where you had two dances,” he said. “The scores were going to be very difficult to overcome.”

While he says he personally only expected to make it to the third week of the show at most, Spicer, in response to fans who wanted him to go home sooner, says that it's important to remember that the format of the show is based on who the audience wants to see come back each week.

"The show is what it is, that last 28 seasons, it’s half the judges score and half the viewers score," Spicer said. "I just was humbled by the amount of support we were getting every week to keep us out of the bottom two."

The former Trump staffer went on to say that although he was the target of much online criticism that said he didn't deserve to be there, he used that feedback as motivation to keep working hard in rehearsals.

"To some degree the criticism that I would get would make me want to do more and work harder so that people out there might say 'Okay, he might not be the best guy on the dance floor but he’s trying as hard as he can to make progress and demonstrate it,'" Spicer said.

And it didn't hurt Spicer's chances that he had President Trump taking time to tweet out his support for his former employee several times over the course of the competition and encouraging his Twitter followers to vote for Spicer.

"Vote for Sean Spicer on Dancing with the Stars. He is a great and very loyal guy who is working very hard. He is in the quarterfinals — all the way with Sean!" Trump tweeted before Monday night's show.

The tweet was later deleted after Spicer was eliminated. Spicer went on to thank Trump for his support and for his years of friendship.

“I appreciate his support and his continued friendship," Spicer said. "It means a tremendous amount to me to know that he’s taking time to put his support out there. I thank him for that.”
