August's full moon shone bright across the globe, from the Statue of Liberty in New York to the Colosseum in Rome

Rare super blue moon in New JerseyThis month's full moon was certainly a sight to see!
On Aug. 19, the Sturgeon Moon peaked, doubling as a rare super blue moon. Though it didn't actually appear blue in the sky, it certainly looked bigger and brighter than usual.
This is in large part due to the fact that the full moon was slightly closer to Earth during its orbit. This intensifies the look and size of the moon, notably making it 14 percent bigger and up to 30 percent brighter than a usual full moon.
Not only was it a rare event — with the next one not happening until January 2037 — but it was also a huge spectacle.
