How to See the Royal Family's 2023 Christmas Decorations

It may only be October, but the royal family is already planning their annual Christmas decorations.

Today, the Royal Collection Trust—responsible for overseeing visitors to the royal residences of Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, and The Palace of Holyroodhouse—announced the dates that royal residences will be open with Christmas decorations.

"We know some of you don’t want to be thinking about Christmas yet…but for others seeing the royal residences’ beautiful Christmas decorations is a highlight of the season. So, if that’s you, start planning!" the Trust posted on X.

Below, a guide to visiting the royal residences during the holiday season:

At Windsor Castle, the holiday display will be up from November 30, 2023 through January 1, 2024, every Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. (Note, however, Windsor Castle will be closed December 25, December 26, and December 28.) Inside Windsor, there will be a 20-foot high tree in St. George's Hall, taken from Windsor Great Park, and the table in the Waterloo Chamber will be set with festive decorations. Per the Royal Collection Trust, "This year's Christmas display will celebrate the 675th anniversary of the Order of the Garter, the oldest order of chivalry in Britain, which was founded at the Castle in 1348."

At the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, Scotland, the decorations will be up from November 23, 2023 through January 1, 2024, every Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (excluding Monday, December 25).

According to the Trust, "The festive decorations at the Palace of Holyroodhouse will include magnificiently decorated trees in the Throne Room and Great Gallery, adorned with shimmering decorations and sparkling lights, while the Great Stair leading to the historic State Apartments will be draped with twinkling velvet garlands, vibrant berries and seasonal foliage."
